Karolinska Institutet (KI), Sweden, is one of the world´s leading medical universities. KI accounts for over 40% of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden and offers the country’s broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences.

Karolinska University Hospital is connected to the campuses and has a vital role in clinical research and education. Collaboration also takes place with other hospitals in the local area. KI has been developing an innovation system for several years in order to ensure that health and medical care reaps the benefits of medical and health innovations.

KI and Ki Hospital are central nodes in the human biobank community both at the national and international level.

Team Members Contributing to the B3Africa Project

My background is computing engineering and informatics with expertise in bioinformatics, LIMS, IT infrastructures and teaching. I’m currently working as Project Manager at Karolinska Institute and participate in several EU projects related to biomedical research infrastructures.

What is your role in the B3Africa project?

I’m leading WP7 “Use Cases”, which implements a proof of concept for B3Africa project in African and European biomedical research institutions.

What is your vision for the project? What do you wish to contribute to by participating to this project?

This project will potentiate biomedical research collaboration in principle, between EU and Africa but it can also open the door to a more effective international research collaboration in the areas of biobanking, bioinformatics and ELSI. The same concept could be implemented for instance, in Asia and South America, making a great contribution to a global and efficient use of valuable bio-resources and knowledge on human diseases.

I have a background in computer and software engineering. I mainly work in the areas of biobanking and research management, LIMS, bio-resource cataloguing, integration of heterogeneous databases and unstructured data, etc. I am working as a System Developer at Karolinska Institutet.

What is your role in the B3Africa project?

Team member in the Work Package 7 “Use Cases”.

What is your vision for the project? What do you wish to contribute to by participating to this project?

I believe the project will really bridge the gap between Europe and Africa in Biobanking and Biomedical Research and also act as a milestone for future projects. The collaborative platform will no doubt address many bottlenecks in the landscape, but I am particularly interested in the eb3Kit, an integrated system consisting of all the software tools for biobanking workflows and bioinformatics pipelines packaged in a portable kit. The small and new biobanks which do not have much resources can greatly benefit from this. As Use Case WP, we will implement such a platform in several partner institutions.
