Built in 1960, University of the Western Cape (UWC) is ranked 7th among the 23 universities in South Africa and the only historically black university to be ranked among the top cluster of universities in the South Africa. UWC is home to the South African National Bioinformatics Institute (SANBI) – a center responsible for introducing bioinformatics to South Africa and to the rest of the African continent.
SANBI was established in 1996 and as of 2001 has been established as a Medical Research Council Unit for Bioinformatics Training. During the past 15 years SANBI staff has trained individuals that have expanded bioinformatics at other neighboring institutions. SANBI is recognized as an international bioinformatics entity with an extensive international network of collaborators. SANBI continues to develop internationally competitive computational tools that span both infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases.
